The inevitable impact of parents

Every other psychological study has emphasised on the importance of parents in a child’s life. Each of the parent is responsible for some aspect of development of the child. That’s why the ideal gender roles and responsibilities have become important in a household with children. However, it is also noteworthy that apart from the specific aspects affected by either of the parents, both the parents also contribute to the overall development of the child too.

In a household where work is promoted and asserted by both the parents, the child eventually learns to live by the principles which lead to better work efficiency. Similarly, a household with a joint family, or with a good social life, promotes the ability to be more outgoing in life with a more positive outlook towards life for the child.

The child, furthermore, inherits a number of qualities from the members he / she interacts with the most, up to the member with the interactions have been the least. Usually, most of the characteristics get overridden through time and are persisted only by the top 20% of people with whom the child interacts with. All the other characteristics go ignored if they don’t fit or interest the child in general.

Despite this, some parents would feel guilty or bad about the fact that their child turned out a certain way even though they tried their best to not let that happen. On retrospect, it can be understood that perhaps they did the best they could, however the child was exposed to a lot of other characteristics which built the personality which the parents are not able to control or accept. This ideally happens because parents have such expectations from the child and the efforts that they put into raising the kid, that they forget that there are a number of things that affect the final outcome.

This is indeed worth understanding, especially for parents who feel troubled by factors concerning their children. Most of the parents from the earlier generations don’t believe much in pursuing the psychological / scientific impacts of the family and the surroundings of the children, primarily because either their own childhood had a different approach altogether, or they didn’t feel the need to focus on such a concept at all because most of the situations were ideal in their household.

This mentality can only be countered once they are ready to understand the magnitude of the impact of such concepts, drawing examples from their own childhood and the childhood of their own children. The change in perspective can perhaps lead to a positive outcome, eventually leading to them embracing the idea of scientifically raising a child to give them a chance to grow into the best versions of themselves.

From what I see, the parents do a fairly decent job, but the world as we know today, is beyond messed up, causing the child to develop confusing notions about a lot of things, putting the parents’ authority in question, or even causing the child to diverge from the path laid out by them. Therefore, some responsibility also lies on the child to come back on track and make the right choices. However, this spirit of initiative and morality only comes if the parenting is done right.
